Joel has become best known for his quiet, contemplative landscapes and architectural pieces in pencil, watercolor and oils. The intent of Joel’s artistic creations is to deliver a message of spiritual truth to the viewer. In the tradition of artists such as George Inness, he believes there is more to creation than the mere physical aspects of a subject. Precise drawing as well as the emotional qualities of color are used to add a sense of tranquility and awe to what might be dismissed as mundane reality. For Joel, this expression does not stop at the completion of the artwork, but extends to the frame that surrounds the piece. The artist creates each frame by hand, adding a unique and personal touch that mass-produced frames simply cannot offer.
"From the most magnificent subject to the most humble, I desire my work to impart a sense of something beyond the physical reality we experience everyday. I find the most satisfaction in chasing that elusive trait in landscapes or architecture; when the light pierces the eye, is filtered through the soul, and streams out through the brush or pencil, in hopes that perhaps it may serve as a reminder of the grace and wonderment that is present all around us."
Recently, Joel was selected by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department as one of 31 Texas artists to participate in commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Texas state park system. In addition to landscapes, Joel has also completed numerous portrait commissions. Some notable works include Christian music great Kurt Kaiser, as seen on his latest album cover, Legacy. Also, Joel’s portrait of Dr. Gordon Teal hangs in the Teal Residential College at Baylor University. His creative work has been used for book and magazine covers as well as granite memorials across the United States. He is a member of the National Oil & Acrylic Painters’ Society and the American Artists Professional League and has participated in many national shows and won numerous awards. He continues to study his craft in his hometown of Waco, TX where he lives with his wife and children.
